 Increasing awareness of the importance of diversity in K-12 classrooms is a topic close to my heart. Our country is not a monolith of one culture or one race. We are an ever-evolving amalgamation of people from around the world; learning about and respecting a wide variety of cultures is vital to our survival as a nation. This has to be a vital part of K-12 education spaces. Young people need to be exposed to a variety of topics, skills, and pieces of knowledge during their first thirteen years of education, whether public or private. As I tell my students every week during Math block, we cannot predict the future; neither you nor I know where you will end up as an adult, so you need to learn this math just in case you do end up needing it, and also to practice problem solving and perseverance.  In addition to not knowing the career path young people will take, no one knows who they will work with, who they will live near, or who they will love.
